Market Place
Site Specific Installation
Wood, Silicone, Saddle, Carrots, Sticks, Mixed
2014
Shown at Solo Exhibition at WonderRoot in Atlanta, GA.
Utilizing the potent symbols of the carrot and the stick (reward and punishment) this installation is a response to collective insatiable materialism. Acting as both the enticement and disappointment, the slowly dehydrating carrot seeks to start off as appealing and fresh but over time shrivel and become far less appealing. The hollowness of consumerism hinges on the false notion of gratification through material acquisition, a gratification that tarnishes over time.
The sticks emerge from a black void framed by gold paint, giving the implication of value. The 14 carrots in the installation are suspended by gold threads which act as an extension of this value driven implication.
The central spherical form is a sculptural interpretation of a female human egg. Marketing is effecting our development in profound and immeasurable ways. The saddle signifies the idea that modern advertising practices are taking us for a ride by obscuring our ideas if necessity and desire. As the carrots dry and shrivel, they resemble spermatozoa. This paring with the spherical form is a reference to the use of sex, lust, and the interest of being sexually desired as a staple in the marketing playbook.
