Joseph Bigley
Bio
Joe Bigley is an expanded media sculptor currently based in Boone, N.C. My work has employed a wide range of materials, processes and manners of display. Social commentary is a reoccurring angle which I approach the content of my work. I have used such approaches as single outdoor sculptural work to long term relational aesthetic performance works. My work has been shown across the United States and Internationally. CV Joseph W. A long term public interactive performance project. The length and shape of the border of Afghanistan was mapped out within the United States. This route was pedaled by bicycle as a means to collect the public's reaction to the 10th anniversary of the war in Afghanistan. The 3,730 mile long project took 69 days to complete. The project involved giving a lecture series at contemporary art venues that fell close to the traveled route. Video Footage and writings are still in progress. http://www.travfbd.com -Structured as Such: Architecture of Oppression. Solo exhibition at Liberty Arts in Durham, N.C. (February 2013 – April 2013). This large-scale sculpture installation consists of a series of interior spaces that focus on modes of oppression. Accompanying the exhibition will be a series of lectures, panel discussions, and performances relating to the content of the exhibition including race relations in the southern United States and food as oppression, specific talks are currently being finalized. -Environmental Studio Practices. I have built a metal furnace that runs on reclaimed vegetable fryer oil. I am constantly experimenting and researching ways to achieve maximum efficiency for the furnace. Other forms of renewable energy are being explored to arrive at a sustainable and energy conscious studio practice. I also have a distributor who buys my art wholesale and then resells it wholesale nation wide. I also invented glassblowing tools that i sell wholesale to a few glass supply stores throughout the country. I am always working on new design and concepts in the studio. Studio Manager/Owner, Whatiswhatis Art Studio; Boone, NC — 2009-2011 I opened a 2000 sqft art studio in Boone, NC. We had 10 flame working stations, a hot shop, cold working area and metal fabrication area. I rented booth spaces by the month and rented the hot shop by the day. Myself and a partner owned the equipment so had to maintenance, repair and keep everything running. I offered a 3 day plasma glass workshop with hot glass and neon artist David Wilson which was later published as a 3 page article in Glass Line Magazine (issue#50). The Studio also had a successful Italian goblet workshop there. We used the studio space to make art daily and to fabricate the whatiswhatis art tools. 2004 Exhibited Large Scale Outdoor Sculpture in front of Chapel Hill Museum (6 month exhibit/ stipend show) Chapel Hill, NC [Sculpture titled Full Circle” contained a bright lighted element during the night] 2004-2005 Exhibited Large Scale Outdoor Sculpture in Sculpture Salmagundi Rocky Mount , NC (1 year exhibit/ stipend show Rocky Mount, NC at City Hall [Sculpture titled: Into the Void”] EDUCATION Appalachian State University Boone, NC BFA Studio Art with a Minor in Appropriate Technology 2004 — Penland School of Crafts Penland, NC 2 week workshop with Sally Prasch summer 2007 Penland School of Crafts Penland, NC 2 week workshop with Wayne Strattman spring 2009 Revere Glass School Berkley, CA 3 day workshop with Scott Deppe summer 2009 Corning Museum of Glass Corning, NY 1 week workshop with John Kobuki summer 2013 |
