Structured As Such: Architecture of Oppression
Performance Work by Carolyn Evans
Opening Reception at Liberty Arts. Durham, N.C. 2/15/13.
Ms. Evans performed two separate works in the installation exhibition. Both works were responses to the spaces and made up on the spot.
The first was performed in the low-income housing bedroom. She embodied a child who lived in low income housing, speaking of her relationship with her family. She then switched roles to play the child's mother and expanded on the family dynamics and struggles associated with living under those certain conditions.
The second performance took place among the trans-Atlantic slave trade living quarters. She performed as a slave on a ship who was frantically looking for her child who was taken away from her during her seizure into slavery.
Thank you to Ms. Evans for the powerful and thoughtful performances. Your compassion and wisdom are truly compelling and inspiring.
